Cook Building completed the Suneden Specialist School refurbishment and new build works in 2021, providing new administration facilities, general learning spaces, art and sensory rooms, and outdoor learning areas for children with intellectual and physical disabilities, aged 5 – 21 years.
Recognising the unique environment the school presented, a flexible build approach was required, particularly in terms of noise and physical interactions. The school remained open throughout the works so careful coordination with the school was essential to ensure any disruption was minimised. The teaching staff were regularly informed of the construction program, including areas where works would be occurring so that they could be zoned off if necessary.
To help students view the construction works in an engaging way, the school held a BBQ for National Tradesperson Day where they were able to interact with the subcontractors. This also allowed the students to sensitively familiarise with the subsequent changes in their environment.
